Dental Implants

Dental implants are a great way for people looking for a more effective alternative to dentures or bridges. With today’s advanced technology, dental implants are becoming the ideal method of replacing teeth. Implants provide patients with improved comfort, speech, and overall appearance. Because dental implants are designed to look and feel like natural teeth, they give patients the feeling of durability and convenience.

Dental implants also provide patients with better long-term oral health. Because teeth surrounding the new implant are not altered to support the implant, more of your natural teeth are left undamaged. Implants also allow patients to easily clean between their teeth, meaning better long-term oral health. Dental implants typically require more than one surgery. Because of this, it’s important to have an evaluation with your dentist to prepare for the surgery. This process may include x-rays and an examination of your gums, jaw, and face.

Once you’ve been approved for the surgery, your dentist will apply a local anesthetic and remove the damaged tooth, making a complete absence of the tooth. Jawbone surgery may be required after this extraction, and in some cases grafting of the jawbone is necessary.

Once the jaw has healed, an incision is made in the surrounding gum tissue and a hole is drilled to secure a metal post which will hold the implant. Then, an additional piece is screwed into the implant which will remain throughout the healing process.

Finally, the oral surgeon will reopen the gum to expose the dental implant. The abutment (where the new tooth will go) is attached to the implant and the gum tissue is closed around it. Once the abutment is placed, an impression of one of your natural teeth is made and sent to a lab to make the artificial tooth. After a few weeks of healing, your surgeon will attach the new implant and the healing process can begin again.
